Barry Gosin to Step Down as Newmark Group CEO at Year End, Will Stay as Operating Company Chairman
NEW YORK — Aug. 7, 2026 — Barry Gosin will step down as chief executive officer of Newmark Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: NMRK) on December 31, 2026, the company announced Thursday, concluding a tenure in the role that began in 1979. Gosin will remain with the firm as chairman of Newmark & Company Real Estate, Inc., Newmark's operating company, under an amended employment agreement that runs through 2029.
Newmark's board of directors said it expects to identify a successor CEO by year end. The company described the move as an orderly transition designed to position the firm for continued growth.
Nearly Five Decades at the Helm
Gosin has led Newmark through a series of milestones over his nearly 47-year tenure, including the firm's initial public offering in 2017 and a subsequent spinoff in 2018. Since Newmark & Co. was acquired by its former parent company in October 2011, the firm has grown annual revenues by more than 1,400%, based on unaudited full-year 2011 revenues compared with total revenues for the twelve months ending June 30, 2026. Over that same period, Newmark says its total revenue growth outpaced several publicly traded commercial real estate peers.
For the twelve months ended June 30, 2026, Newmark generated revenues of more than $3.6 billion. The firm now operates from more than 195 offices with more than 10,000 professionals across four continents.
"I have spent nearly my entire career at Newmark, working alongside an exceptional team whose dedication, talent and commitment have made the Company's success possible," Gosin said in a statement. "The Company is stronger than ever, our strategy is working, and the opportunities ahead are substantial, which is why I believe now is the right time to take a step back from day-to-day operations to focus solely on matters that will make a difference to Newmark, and to support the Company through this transition."
Board Emphasizes Continuity
Stephen Merkel, chairman of the board, executive vice president and chief legal officer of Newmark, said the company is focused on preserving institutional continuity as it searches for new leadership.
"We are delighted that Barry will remain with the Company as Chairman of the operating company to help the next generation of leadership as they guide Newmark through its next chapter of growth," Merkel said. "For nearly five decades, Barry, along with his entire leadership team, have led Newmark through some of its most consequential milestones, including its initial public offering in 2017 and becoming the fastest growing publicly traded commercial real estate firm in the world, increasing annual revenues by over 1,400% since 2011 while expanding to more than 10,000 professionals across approximately 195 locations."
Under the terms of his amended and restated employment agreement, Gosin will focus on what the company described as "relevant and impactful topics" in his chairman role, while supporting the transition to new executive leadership.
Transition Comes Amid Uneven Market Recovery
The leadership change arrives as the commercial real estate industry navigates a recovery that remains gradual and uneven. Office leasing has shown improvement, with annual demand turning positive in mid-2026, but tenants are signing smaller leases than before 2020 and activity is concentrated in modern Class A product. Class B and C assets continue to face pressure from hybrid work patterns and repositioning risk.
Capital markets have stabilized but remain selective, with investors focused on income durability, cash flow, and lease stability. For large advisory firms such as Newmark, that environment places a premium on scale, institutional relationships, and leadership continuity.
Newmark's client base of large institutional investors, global corporations, and other owners and occupiers positions the firm at the center of those market dynamics. The next CEO will inherit a platform operating at significant scale across leasing, capital markets, valuation, and advisory services, in a market still shaped by hybrid work, uneven asset performance, and cautious capital deployment.
Search for New CEO Underway
Newmark said its board of directors is actively working to identify a new chief executive officer before December 31, 2026. The company did not disclose candidates or a formal search process timeline. Gosin's continued role as operating company chairman through 2029 is structured to provide stability during and after the CEO handoff.
Newmark Group, Inc. is listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker NMRK.
