Crescent Communities Opens 318-Unit NOVEL River District Multifamily Development in West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Crescent Communities has announced the grand opening of NOVEL River District, a 318-unit Class-A multifamily community located within The River District, a 1,400-acre master-planned development in West Charlotte. The property, situated in Westrow — The River District's 70-acre town center — is the first multifamily community to open within the larger mixed-use project, marking a significant milestone in the phased development of the site.
First Multifamily Phase in a 2,350-Unit Pipeline
NOVEL River District offers studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartment homes and is the first of approximately 2,350 multifamily units Crescent Communities projects for The River District at full buildout. The property features nine-foot ceilings, quartz countertops, wooden decks, barn doors, large kitchen islands, and in-unit front-load washers and dryers. Outdoor amenities include bike storage, gear rental for cycling and kayaking, a hammock garden, a fireside lounge, a recreation lawn, and an on-site dog park with a wash station.
"NOVEL River District represents a significant step in expanding Charlotte's multifamily offerings with a community designed around how people want to live today," said Michael Tubridy, Crescent Communities' Senior Managing Director for the Carolinas. "As the first multifamily phase within The River District, it brings together walkability, access to nature, and a strong sense of place, all delivered through the quality and experience that define the NOVEL brand."
Rainer Ficken, Senior Managing Director of The River District, framed the opening in the context of the broader master plan. "The River District is about creating a place that feels connected — to the land, to the river, and to the people who will live and work here," Ficken said. "With NOVEL River District, we're beginning to bring that vision to life in a tangible way, setting the foundation for a dynamic, mixed-use community that will evolve over time and become a destination for Charlotte."
Sustainability Credentials and One Planet Living Framework
NOVEL River District has achieved National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Silver certification, incorporating solar panel installations alongside energy and water efficiency measures. The broader River District has been developed around the One Planet Living framework, making it the first community in the Southeast and only the third built environment project in the United States to receive that recognition. The framework guides decisions across energy, materials, food, health, and land use.
Master Plan Progress: Single-Family, Affordable Units, and Retail
The River District has been advancing on multiple residential fronts alongside the NOVEL River District opening. Last fall, the development welcomed its first resident to a David Weekley-designed single-family home in Westrow. Additional single-family homes and townhomes are currently under construction and available for purchase.
Crescent Communities has also broken ground on 140 single-family lots in its Basswood neighborhood and on Forge Village in Westrow. Forge Village is planned to include a playground, a two-acre working farm, a pavilion with an event lawn, and a community building with a café and store selling produce from the farm.
On the affordable housing front, Crescent Communities donated land within The River District to local developer Laurel Street, which closed on 87 mixed-income multifamily units in January. Delivery of those units is expected in early 2027.
Project Team and Charlotte Portfolio Activity
Financial partners on NOVEL River District include UMB Financial Corporation. The project team includes Cooper Carry as architect, Crescent Communities Construction as general contractor, Ellinwood + Machado as structural engineer, ENGR3 as MEP engineer, BB+M Architecture for interior design, and Land Design for landscape design and civil engineering.
The River District opening comes as Crescent Communities has been active across its broader Charlotte multifamily portfolio. Its currently leasing communities in the Charlotte market include NOVEL University Place and NOVEL Mallard Creek.
