Deutsche Pfandbriefbank Names Barkha Mehmedagic Head of Commercial Real Estate Financing
Munich, Nov. 21, 2025 — Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG (pbb) announced that Barkha Mehmedagic will assume responsibility for its commercial real estate financing division, succeeding Thomas Köntgen, who is leaving the bank at his own request and on the best of terms after more than ten years on the Management Board.
Leadership Transition in Commercial Real Estate Financing
According to pbb, Mehmedagic will take over the role by July 1, 2026, at the latest. She joins from ING Germany, where she oversaw commercial real estate financing for Germany, Austria, and Czechia in the corporate client segment. The 47-year-old banker brings more than 25 years of experience in the real estate industry.
Before her tenure at ING, Mehmedagic held senior positions at Commerz Real Kapitalverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH and Commerz Real AG, serving as Managing Director and Management Board member responsible for institutional sales and Group Treasury. She has also taught at the International Real Estate Business School (IREBS) in Regensburg and served as deputy chair of the financing committee at the German Property Federation (ZIA).
Departure of Thomas Köntgen After a Decade
Köntgen’s departure marks the end of a significant period for pbb’s real estate operations. He played a key role in shaping the bank’s core business in commercial real estate financing and contributed to its strategic development since its return to the stock market. “We would like to thank Thomas Köntgen, who has shaped our core business, commercial real estate financing, for over a decade,” said Dr. Louis Hagen, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of pbb. “We wish him all the best for the future.”
Strategic Outlook for pbb
Chief Executive Officer Kay Wolf said the bank is aligning its sales platform with evolving market realities, noting that commercial real estate financing is increasingly attracting private capital from institutional investors. “Her expertise combines outstanding knowledge of real estate financing with a deep understanding of the market for institutional investors,” Wolf said of Mehmedagic. “She will drive forward the further development of our business.”
Mehmedagic will initially join pbb as General Representative and, subject to regulatory approval, will assume her Executive Board responsibilities as soon as possible.
