GILBERTS, IL — Opus has completed construction on a 52,174-square-foot build-to-suit industrial facility for Elgin Recycling at 58 Center Drive in Gilberts, Illinois, the Minneapolis-based real estate development firm announced April 21, 2026. The facility, situated within Turnberry Lakes Business Park, expands the family-owned company's recycled electronics processing capability and is expected to be fully operational by July 2026.

Facility Specifications and Purpose

The new single-building industrial facility sits on a 2.76-acre site and features a 28-foot clear height, six dock doors, two drive-in doors, and up to 58 vehicle parking stalls. Designed specifically for electronics recycling operations, the facility processes recycled electronics collected from public drop-off locations, breaking components down for transport to downstream recyclers. It includes a high-efficiency shredder and adheres to R2 data sanitization and security practices to meet sensitive information compliance standards and government mandates.

The Gilberts location is situated near Elgin Recycling's headquarters and one of its four Chicago-area recycling scrap yards. Elgin Recycling is a family-owned business that processes ferrous and non-ferrous metals, exotic alloys, and electronics.

Integrated Design-Build Approach

Opus served as design-builder on the project, working in partnership with Architects Plus Design Studio PLLC as architect of record, Structural Enginuity, Inc. as structural engineer of record, and Spaceco as civil engineer of record.

"This project came to us through a referral, but we still had to demonstrate why Opus was the right partner for the job," said Luke Zizzo, senior project manager with Opus. "Our integrated design-build approach allowed us to show how we could maximize the functionality of the space, streamline the process and deliver a facility that supports Elgin Recycling's operations today and into the future."

Bob Conroy, owner and president of Elgin Recycling, noted the firm's involvement across the full project lifecycle. "Opus guided us through the entire process, from entitlement to design and through construction, and helped us make smart decisions about how to use the space efficiently," Conroy said. "The end result is a facility that improves our processing capabilities and positions us well for continued growth."
