Opus Completes Gerdin Fieldhouse Renovation and Expansion at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa

DECORAH, Iowa — Opus has completed the Gerdin Fieldhouse for Athletics and Wellness at Luther College, the Minneapolis-based real estate development, design and construction firm announced May 28, 2026. The project, which involved a major renovation and a 15,787-square-foot expansion of the college's existing 200,000-square-foot Regents Center, was formally celebrated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 9, 2026.
Luther College President Brad Chamberlain and Michael Gerdin '92, the lead project donor and alumnus, attended the ceremony. The project was made possible in part through a $10 million gift from Michael and Nicole Gerdin and the Gerdin Charitable Foundation.
Scope of the Project
Construction on the Gerdin Fieldhouse began in August 2024. The work encompassed several additions and renovations to the Regents Center, which was originally built in 1963 and serves as the campus home of Luther's Norse Athletics program.
Opus constructed a new 5,787-square-foot public lobby on the facility's north end, featuring a concession stand, restrooms and a Hall of Fame space highlighting Norse athletic achievements and student abilities. The firm also built a new 10,200-square-foot wrestling training complex. Extensive renovations were completed to the existing basketball and volleyball arena, and athlete training and rehabilitation facilities, locker rooms, and meeting and study spaces serving all 21 Norse athletic teams were updated. Luther College's athletic teams began using the facility during the winter prior to the April 2026 formal completion.
Opus served as design-builder on the project and partnered with RDG Planning & Design on the work.
A 25-Year Institutional Partnership
The Gerdin Fieldhouse project is the latest in a long-running relationship between Opus and Luther College. According to the firm, it has partnered with the college on every construction project pursued over the past 25 years, a portfolio that includes academic facilities, music halls, an aquatic center, a recreation center, and upgraded football and baseball stadiums.
"We've partnered with Luther College on every construction project they've pursued over the last 25 years — from academic facilities to music halls to an aquatic center, a recreation center, upgraded football and baseball stadiums and more. Over that time, we've come to know just how important Norse Athletics are to this school community and to the entire Decorah community, too," said Jeff Smith, senior vice president of construction with Opus. "That Norse pride made this project especially rewarding."
