STRABAG AG Austria has been awarded a €152 million contract to build the new central emergency department at Klinik Favoriten in Vienna on behalf of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund (Vienna Healthcare Group), the company announced on 15 October 2026. The contract covers the first construction phase and includes building construction, electrical engineering and building services, with subsidiary Lohr Gebäudetechnik GmbH responsible for the technical systems.

Contract Scope and Key Terms

STRABAG is acting as partial general contractor for Lots 1–3, which encompass construction, electrical engineering and HVAC, for construction phase 1. The client is the City of Vienna, through the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund. The contract was booked in the third quarter of 2026, and the construction period runs from September 2026 to the first quarter of 2030.

The company said it is responsible not only for the construction works but also for the electrical engineering and building services, bringing together its core capabilities for a highly complex hospital project under one roof. The first construction phase is scheduled to become operational in 2030.

New Central Hospital Building at Klinik Favoriten

The new central emergency department forms part of the new central hospital building at Klinik Favoriten, one of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund's largest healthcare construction projects. With approximately 65,000 square meters (about 699,700 square feet) of usable floor space, the building will bring together key medical departments and provide healthcare infrastructure in the south of Vienna. The building has nine levels and approximately 255,000 cubic meters of construction volume.

The new facility will accommodate the central emergency department, including patient admission and initial treatment units, highly specialized intensive care units, outpatient clinics, diagnostic and interventional facilities, and several inpatient wards for internal medicine and pulmonology. The broader central-building program is planned for completion by 2035.

The program is intended to consolidate medical services, shorten internal patient and staff routes, and replace or integrate older campus structures. The Wiener Gesundheitsverbund describes the project as one of its largest healthcare developments, with eight existing pavilions incorporated into the new central building and connections to facilities including the mother-and-child center and laboratory infrastructure.

Based on the stated contract value and floor area, the award equates to roughly €2,338 per square meter, or about €217 per square foot. The figure is indicative only, since the award covers the first construction phase and specified lots and may exclude land, professional fees, financing, contingencies and medical equipment.

Lohr Gebäudetechnik GmbH Handles Building Services

Lohr Gebäudetechnik, a STRABAG subsidiary, is responsible for all building services on the project. These include energy supply and distribution systems; heating, ventilation, air conditioning and sanitary installations; building automation and communication; and security and electrical systems designed to ensure the high availability required for hospital operations.

Hospitals are among the most technically demanding types of buildings, with a secure energy supply and the seamless interaction of complex technical systems particularly important. Technical infrastructure in a central emergency department must ensure reliable operation around the clock while meeting standards for hygiene, energy efficiency and functionality.

Building Within an Operating Hospital

Klinik Favoriten remains a functioning hospital campus, and construction will take place immediately adjacent to intensive care units, outpatient clinics and other sensitive medical facilities. This requires working methods that minimize noise and vibration in addition to meeting quality and hygiene standards. Limited space and a single access point to the construction site also call for detailed logistics planning.

The company said the project's success depends on coordinating complex processes so that hospital operations continue uninterrupted throughout the construction period.

Integrated Delivery and STRABAG's Backlog

STRABAG said the project reflects growing integration of construction, building services and building operations, and that considering future operational requirements from the earliest design and construction stages is increasingly important in technically demanding buildings such as hospitals. The company said its expertise across the building lifecycle allows it to combine building construction, building services and facility management, reducing interfaces and enabling close coordination of design, construction and operational processes. Its building services and facility management expertise is consolidated under STRABAG PFS as a building solutions provider.

The award follows a period of backlog growth. STRABAG's year-end 2025 order backlog reached €31.37 billion, up approximately 24% year over year and above €30 billion for the first time. Growth was driven by strategic markets including mobility, energy and water infrastructure, and high-tech facilities. At the end of the first half of 2025, the backlog stood at €28.37 billion, up 13% year over year, with strong acquisition activity in railway construction, energy infrastructure, high-tech buildings, and university and research facilities. Austria was among the regions showing notable backlog growth.

At €152 million, the Klinik Favoriten contract is large relative to STRABAG's project mix: only 65 projects in its year-end 2025 backlog exceeded €150 million, among more than 14,000 individual projects.

Market Context

Hospitals, research facilities and other specialized buildings place particularly high demands on design, construction and operation because of their technical complexity. The project will allow STRABAG to further expand its expertise in demanding healthcare and infrastructure projects. The Klinik Favoriten award is a publicly commissioned construction contract rather than an income-producing property transaction, so no sale price, financing or yield figures apply.
