KUALA LUMPUR — A consortium led by Gamuda Engineering has secured an A$880 million (RM2.54 billion) contract to design and build the future Parramatta metro station and associated infrastructure under Sydney Metro West, Malaysia-listed Gamuda Bhd announced Sept. 4, 2026.

Sydney Metro awarded the Parramatta Integrated Station Development project to the Riverside Link Consortium, comprising Gamuda Engineering Pty Ltd and Gamuda (Australia) Pty Ltd — both wholly owned Australian units of Gamuda Bhd — together with MTR Corporation (Australia) Pty Ltd. Gamuda Engineering holds an 80% participation in the station works contract, with MTR Corporation (Australia) holding the remaining 20%.

Works commenced Sept. 4, 2026, with completion targeted for 2032.

Station Works and Development Rights

The A$880 million contract covers the design and construction of the Parramatta metro station and associated station infrastructure. The station site occupies the block bounded by George, Macquarie, Church and Smith streets in Parramatta's CBD, with legal addresses spanning 41–59 George St., 45A George St., 61B and 71 George St., 220–238 Church St., and 48–74 Macquarie St.

Beyond the station works, the award includes development rights for four integrated developments above and adjacent to the future station, comprising commercial, retail and residential uses. Gamuda (Australia) and MTR Corporation (Australia) are expected to participate equally in the development-rights component, which is anticipated to be undertaken in phases after Sydney Metro West opens, subject to planning approvals and final contractual and funding arrangements.

Gamuda Land will participate in the development of the station precinct, combining the group's infrastructure and property development capabilities. The NSW government has indicated the revised proposal could increase residential dwellings associated with the precinct from 111 to 970. Reported planning details include approximately 470 build-to-rent apartments and 500 student-accommodation beds across two towers, though the development program remains subject to further planning approvals and final arrangements.

The precinct is positioned between Church, Macquarie and George streets, centred on a landscaped park intended to form part of Parramatta's future Civic Link connecting to the Powerhouse Museum and the Parramatta River foreshore.

Gamuda's Expanding Role in Sydney Metro West

The Parramatta award extends Gamuda Engineering's footprint on the Sydney Metro West project. The group is already involved in the Western Tunnelling Package and the Stations Package West, which covers five stations. Parramatta will be the sixth station along the Metro West alignment to be delivered by Gamuda Engineering.

Sydney Metro West is a planned 24-kilometre underground line linking Parramatta with Sydney's central business district. The line is planned to include nine stations — Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street — and remains targeted for a 2032 opening. Major tunnelling was completed earlier in 2026, and the project has entered a phase involving station excavation, track and rail-system installation and construction of supporting facilities.

Gamuda said the project is expected to contribute positively to its revenue and earnings over the duration of the contract.

Parramatta as Western Sydney's Second CBD

The Parramatta station site sits within the commercial core of the CBD, approximately 200 metres north of the existing Parramatta heavy-rail station and close to the Parramatta Square light-rail stop. Gamuda said Parramatta's position as an emerging second central business district for Sydney, together with the continuing development of Western Sydney, is expected to support longer-term demand for residential and commercial properties surrounding the station.

The potential increase in the precinct's dwelling count — from 111 to as many as 970 — positions the award as relevant to residential and commercial property markets, not only to infrastructure delivery. The development-rights structure gives Gamuda and MTR Corporation (Australia) exposure to future development value, with the station-works contract providing the primary near-term revenue contribution.

Market Reaction
