National Real Estate Advisors Names Kevin Verdi CEO in Planned January 2027 Succession

National Real Estate Advisors has announced a planned leadership transition, naming Kevin Verdi as President and Chief Executive Officer effective January 2027. Verdi will succeed Jeffrey Kanne, who founded the firm and will retire after more than 25 years at its helm. Kanne will continue to support the organization as a Special Advisor following the handoff.
A Succession Built From Within
Verdi is a long-tenured company veteran whose history with the organization predates National Real Estate Advisors itself, beginning with its predecessor entity, NEBF Real Estate. He currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, overseeing investment strategy, sourcing, underwriting, and management of the firm's institutional-quality real estate investments. The board and senior leadership team developed the succession plan collaboratively, and both Kanne and Verdi are expected to work closely together through the remainder of 2026 to ensure continuity for employees, investors, and partners.
"When we founded National, our vision was to build an investment platform grounded in partnership, integrity, innovation, and a long-term commitment to our investors," Kanne said. "It has been the privilege of a lifetime to work alongside such talented colleagues, trusted investors, and valued partners. Kevin has been instrumental in National's success since day one, and I have complete confidence in his leadership and vision for the firm's next chapter."
Verdi acknowledged the foundation Kanne established while signaling continuity in strategy. "National's success has always been rooted in the strength of our people, the trust of our investors, and the quality of our partnerships," Verdi said. "Jeff has built an extraordinary organization and set a standard of excellence that will continue to guide us. I am honored to lead National into its next phase of growth and remain committed to advancing our long-term investment strategy while delivering results for our investors."
John Grau, Chairman of the Board of National Real Estate Advisors, said the firm is confident in the choice. "Jeff's leadership has been instrumental in shaping National into the firm it is today. We are deeply grateful for his many years of service, dedication, and impact. As we look ahead, we are confident that Kevin's expertise and vision make him the right leader to build on that foundation," Grau said.
A Sequenced Leadership Buildout in 2026
The CEO announcement is the latest in a series of organizational moves National Real Estate Advisors made in 2026. The firm elevated Verdi to Executive Vice President earlier in the year and added a new head of investor relations in June, moves that suggest the transition was part of a deliberate, sequenced leadership buildout rather than an abrupt change. Kanne's decision to remain as Special Advisor is consistent with a strategy aimed at preserving investor and client relationships during the changeover.
National Real Estate Advisors is an independently operated subsidiary of the National Electrical Benefit Fund, a pension trust whose assets are managed by National on a discretionary basis. Since its founding in 2000, the firm has built diversified investment portfolios concentrated primarily in multifamily, data centers, healthcare-related, and mixed-use facilities. It manages separate accounts and commingled investment vehicles on behalf of U.S. and international institutional investors, applying what it describes as a disciplined investment process and development-led approach to value creation.
Market Context: Leadership Transitions in a Refinancing-Heavy Environment
The announcement comes as commercial real estate capital markets navigate a period of elevated refinancing pressure. An estimated $875 billion of commercial and multifamily mortgage debt was set to mature in 2026, with another $652 billion due in 2027, and new loan rates running roughly 200 basis points higher than the debt being replaced. That environment has placed a premium on capital discipline, investor relations, and leadership continuity across institutional real estate managers.
Transaction activity has also been uneven. Commercial real estate sales reached $24.7 billion in April 2026, down 33% year over year, even as average cap rates held near 6.6%. Against that backdrop, firms with concentrated exposure to sectors showing durable demand — such as multifamily, data centers, and healthcare — have been better positioned to maintain investor confidence.
Portfolio Focus Aligns With Sectors Showing Demand Support
National Real Estate Advisors' primary asset concentrations align with several of the more resilient corners of the commercial real estate market heading into the transition period. Multifamily demand has remained supported by affordability constraints that continue to limit homeownership options for many households. Data center demand has been driven by AI-related growth, keeping vacancies near historic lows even as power constraints limit new supply. In healthcare-related real estate, a trend toward decentralized care has supported medical office and outpatient properties, with construction completions expected to drop sharply in 2026, a dynamic that could support vacancy stabilization and rent growth.
Cap rates across most property types are expected to compress modestly, though broader pricing recovery remains sensitive to interest rates and capital availability. For National Real Estate Advisors, the leadership transition positions Verdi — an executive already embedded in the firm's portfolio, investor base, and strategy — to guide the organization through what the firm has characterized as its next phase of growth.
