Peakside Capital Completes Hospitality Real Estate Repositioning With Taj Hessischer Hof Frankfurt Opening
FRANKFURT AM MAIN, June 2, 2026 — European investment manager Peakside Capital has completed a refurbishment of the former Grandhotel Hessischer Hof in Frankfurt, handing over the keys to The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL). The property reopened June 1, 2026 as the Taj Hessischer Hof Frankfurt — the first Taj-branded luxury hotel in continental Europe.
The project, which Peakside initiated with its purchase of the property from the Hessische Hausstiftung in December 2022, culminated in a formal key handover between Boris Schran and Simon Lutz, partners at Peakside, and Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO of IHCL.
Deal Structure
Peakside signed a 20-year lease agreement with IHCL in 2023, giving the Indian hotel company — part of the Tata Group — operational control of the asset under its flagship Taj luxury brand. According to Peakside's announcement, IHCL operates a portfolio of more than 270 hotels across eleven countries on four continents. A separate IHCL disclosure included in the same announcement puts its global portfolio, including pipeline properties, at 630 hotels across 15 countries.
The property is located near Messe Frankfurt. The acquisition price and total refurbishment capital deployed were not disclosed.
"We are delighted that the legendary Hessischer Hof, with its long tradition as a five-star hotel close to the Frankfurt Trade Fair, is now reopening its doors as a Taj Hotel," said Boris Schran. "Many former guests and visitors from across Germany and around the world have been eagerly awaiting this moment, as has the city of Frankfurt am Main."
Refurbishment Preserves Heritage While Introducing Taj Identity
The refurbished hotel now offers approximately 130 luxury guestrooms and suites, multiple conference rooms, a spa and fitness area, terraces, a conservatory and underground parking. The food and beverage program includes the Indian restaurant Bombay Brasserie. The property's historic Jimmy's Bar has been preserved. The Chambers, described as India's first exclusive business club, is also opening a branch within the hotel.
According to Peakside, the redesign incorporated modern elements while maintaining the building's architectural integrity, with Indian color schemes featured prominently throughout the guestrooms. The hotel is being managed by Albert Mayr.
Simon Lutz said the firm was confident in its choice of operator. "We are confident that we have found the right new operators for the Hessischer Hof in IHCL and Taj," Lutz said. "With their extensive experience in the luxury hotel industry, they will lead the hotel into a bright future."
Puneet Chhatwal said IHCL views the Frankfurt opening as an extension of the Taj brand's history. "With the Taj Hessischer Hof Frankfurt, we will be continuing the history of this great establishment to the highest standards," Chhatwal said. "For more than a century, the Taj brand has stood for luxury hospitality of the highest order, genuine warmth and comprehensive service. We are now bringing these qualities to Frankfurt and aim to set new standards here."
Peakside Capital's Broader Real Estate Strategy
Peakside Capital Advisors AG manages assets valued at over €1.7 billion on behalf of institutional investors and has acquired assets totaling approximately €4.7 billion. The firm's investment strategies span core, value-add and opportunistic approaches across commercial and residential real estate, including single properties, developments, portfolios, distressed debt and real estate operating companies. The firm employs more than 45 professionals across offices in Frankfurt, Zug, Warsaw, Prague, Munich and Luxembourg.
IHCL's Continental Europe Expansion
For IHCL, the Frankfurt opening represents its first Taj-branded hotel on the European continent. The company was incorporated by Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata and has operated The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai since 1903. The Taj brand was ranked World's Strongest Hotel Brand 2025 and India's Strongest Brand 2025 by Brand Finance, according to IHCL.
IHCL's broader brand portfolio includes Claridges Collection, Brij, Atmantan, SeleQtions, Gateway, Vivanta, Tree of Life and Ginger. The company is listed on the BSE and NSE and is described as India's largest hospitality company by market capitalization.
Chhatwal acknowledged Peakside's role in bringing the project to completion. "We would like to thank Peakside for the good cooperation over the past few years and look forward to continuing our partnership," he said.
