Kommunale Immobilien Dresden GmbH & Co. KG Breaks Ground on €66 Million Vocational Campus in Dresden-Prohlis

Kommunale Immobilien Dresden GmbH & Co. KG (KID) has started construction of the EXZELLENZ Vocational Training Centre for Electrical Engineering in Dresden-Prohlis, Germany, with a ceremonial foundation-stone laying on 2 November 2026. Ed. Züblin AG, part of STRABAG, is building the campus as main contractor on behalf of KID under a contract valued at approximately €66 million net.
The project, located on Boxberger Straße in Dresden-Prohlis, is co-financed by the European Union. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, with the school campus due to open in spring 2029.
Campus Scope and Capacity
The site will include a modern school building, a four-court sports hall with a ground-level car park, and sports and open spaces. Once completed, the campus will offer about 2,250 pupils facilities for training in mechatronics, microtechnology, electrical engineering and computer science.
Ed. Züblin AG is responsible for the planning and turnkey construction of the educational campus, including all external works and infrastructure measures. The project is intended to support the training of skilled workers for the microelectronics and semiconductor industries in Saxony.
Hybrid Timber Construction by ZÜBLIN Timber
The buildings are being constructed using a hybrid timber construction method. A high degree of prefabrication and a modular grid structure will facilitate structured and precise implementation on site.
ZÜBLIN Timber GmbH is responsible for key timber construction works. Its scope includes supplying about 12,000 square meters of LENO® ceilings and timber-frame façade elements for the school building and the sports hall. For the sports hall, ZÜBLIN Timber is also supplying and installing the roof structure made of glued laminated timber. Timber construction work will begin in November 2026 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
Circular Economy and Sustainability Measures
Reuse of materials is planned for several building components:
- Concrete from the demolition will be processed on site and reused as a foundation cushion.
- Used Wiedemann slabs recovered from the site's previous use as a school will be re-laid.
- Recycled clinker brick slips are planned for parts of the ground-floor façade.
Photovoltaic systems are planned for the campus, and green roofs with retention areas form part of the rainwater management system.
Project Timeline and Key Figures
The construction period runs from 2026 to 2028, with commissioning planned for spring 2029. The contract value is approximately €66 million net. Ed. Züblin AG said in the release: "The new vocational training centre will be a modern learning environment that places high demands on construction and coordination. The timber-hybrid construction method, the high degree of prefabrication and the size of the campus make this a particularly exciting project. Together with our partners, we are working to successfully realise this important educational facility for the state capital, Dresden."
Market Context
The campus is designed to train workers in fields tied to Saxony's semiconductor and high-tech manufacturing base, reflecting public investment in education and workforce infrastructure that supports advanced manufacturing.
The contract comes as STRABAG reported 2025 group revenue of €18.71 billion, up 7% year over year, and a year-end order backlog of €31.37 billion, up 24% from €25.36 billion in 2024. High-tech industrial construction has been a driver of the group's growth, including in Germany. In its first-half 2025 update, STRABAG identified high-tech buildings and university and research facilities among the project categories driving order intake.
Ed. Züblin AG reported 2025 output of €4.8 billion, compared with €4.6 billion in 2024, an order backlog of €10.0 billion, compared with €8.6 billion, and new orders of €6.3 billion, compared with €4.2 billion. The €66 million contract represents roughly 0.66% of ZÜBLIN's 2025 output and about 0.35% of STRABAG's 2025 revenue.
The Dresden project is a public-sector educational development rather than an income-producing property transaction. It also reflects growing use of prefabricated timber components and glued laminated timber structures in institutional construction. STRABAG has reported that delays and budget uncertainty affected parts of the German road-construction market, while power-line, railway, high-tech and other infrastructure work remained stronger.
